by John D. MacDonald
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a very well told story, but it wasn't a kind of story that I like. It was too gritty and too dark for my tastes and in many places it had the rapid pace of a thriller which I don't like. The tone of the writing was noir-ish which I do like.

John D. MacDonald is often mentioned as one of the great mystery writers of the 20th century and I can see why. I'm glad I read one of his books, but probably won't read more.
This book was on my Classics Club list and could have counted toward the Back to the Classics Challenge as a 20th century book but I already completed that category.
